Review: Delightful Dvorak, September 2025

September 2025 Dvorak Concert
Music plays an important role in the life of Angus, and this spirit is upheld by Tayside Symphony Orchestra. On Saturday evening, TSO presented an evocative programme entitled Delightful Dvorak,’ drawing a warm and appreciative audience in Reid Hall, Forfar.
The programme opened with the rarely performed overture, Wanda, a dramatic and richly textured piece that showcased the Orchestra’s confidence and cohesion.
Conductor Richard Allan led the Orchestra with poise and precision, bringing out the lyrical charm and Bohemian flair that defines Dvorak’s style. The programme continued with a vibrant performance of the American Suite. Within the 5 movements, the Orchestra’s interpretation of the 4th movement, (Andante), was especially moving.
The mood then shifted with the well-known piano piece, Humoresque, arranged for orchestra. This entertaining arrangement allowed each section of the Orchestra to participate in the principal melody, with all taking the opportunity to shine.
Slavonic Dance No. 8 was another piece which channels the spirit of Eastern European folk melodies. The orchestra clearly enjoyed this well-known dance, with brass and strings in particular, delivering a rousing performance.
TSO reached its emotional and musical peak with a commanding performance of Symphony No. 5, in F Major. The Orchestra navigated its 4 movements with musical expression evident throughout and delivered a compelling performance which was clearly appreciated by the audience.
This was a well-executed programme which highlighted the longevity of Dvorak’s works.
